Watershed Technology Electronic Catalog
more info
This is a catalog of adaptable technology available in electronic form.
The focus of this edition is information, drawings, and specifications
which can be used in restoration or protection of streams. It includes
items such as fences, erosion control structures, vegetative practices,
instream fish habitat structures, roads and crossings, silt fences, and
other works that benefit streams, or mitigates undesired effects on
streams, through a watershed approach. The information is public and is
not for resale.
This is the first national edition. It will be updated periodically, and by
no means should this be considered a completed product. Technology
will evolve and require updates; products, applications, and needs will
change over time. A watershed approach will result in a broadening of
materials and audiences requiring additions and revisions.
The originating location is a part of the electronic record for each item.
Updates and drawings
prepared in the future will include Standard International (metric)
details in accord with the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 (Public Law 94-168)
and its amendments.
How can you use these documents?
The user is accorded the credit and must assume the responsibility for use.
The decision on whether to use any of the provided technology at a specific
site must be based upon careful planning, adequate investigation, and
appropriate technical skills and judgment. Some of the included material
may be outdated.
The drawings and associated information can be useful in explaining
concepts, in developing implementation plans, and in review of
implementation. The intent of this material is to provide a starting point
for the development of project specific details. A specific plan may
require use of additional references. The OSHA standards, the NRCS
references such as the Handbook of Conservation Practices, the Engineering
Field Manual, the Model State Standards and General Specifications,
materials specifications, construction specifications, or information
from other agencies should be considered.
The catalog provides users with the opportunity to accelerate the
development of technology. The materials in the catalog can be used by
others and their experience becomes available to you through direct
contact, review of summary comments, or updates of the catalog.
Accordingly the developed materials provided for future inclusion
should accommodate wide usage.
What is included?
This is a collection of stream related technologies and structures which
generally require drawings. The collection is categorized by topics
which describe the technology, its use or location of use. Currently,
the categories include soil bioengineering, fencing, instream
improvements, pollution control, recreation facilities, shaped slopes,
revetments, roads and crossings, urban plantings, hydraulic structures
and watersheds. Select the category of interest and look there first.
Some items may apply in more than one category so check any possibility
before deciding the item is not included.
Each drawing may be conceptual, illustrative, or detailed. The type of
drawing may meet needs of user groups such as volunteers, individuals,
or contractors as follows;
1) conceptual and/or illustrative - for information
2) jobsheets/drawings - for installation by volunteers or cooperators
3) contract documents
The first edition contains widely applicable, successfully applied
technology, and some technology which has had few applications. Some of the
material may be outdated, and may no longer apply for certain uses.
Future additions
Additional categories are expected in the future to address the concerns
related to the natural resources of soil, water, animal, plant, and air
(SWAPA).
For the future, two levels of information are proposed. One level would
include information that has been successfully applied, or reviewed for
adequacy by a WTEC team. The second level will include newly
developed technology that has not been reviewed.
Periodically an independent review team could be established to provide
feedback and identify information which should be added or removed.
Policy and procedures will be established to meet future needs as
planned by WTEC teams or identified by the response of users.
How are the electronic files provided and organized?
The WTEC is available on the Internet through the NRCS Home Page,
Technical References, (http://ncg.nrcs.usda.gov/tech_ref.html).
Thumbnail views (.gif format) are included to aid in file selection.
The files are collected in directories of closely related materials. The files
are available in formats (.dxf or .dwg) prepared using AutoCAD version
12. Some files are available in format (.doc) prepared using MS Word
version 5. Procedures for downloading are included on the WTEC page.
Printing or editing the files will require software for the downloaded
format. The current directories include;
FENCING
INSTREAM IMPROVEMENTS
POLLUTION CONTROL
RECREATION FACILITIES
REVETMENTS
ROADS AND CROSSINGS
SHAPED SLOPES
SOIL BIOENGINEERING
URBAN PLANTINGS
HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES
WATERSHED
The subject files are not necessarily exclusive and may contain materials
which could be filed under another subject. For example stream
crossings are included in ROADS AND CROSSINGS whereas a user might
originally expect them in the directory INSTREAM IMPROVEMENTS.
Contributors
We thank all of the contributors to this edition, and note that many
materials were not selected because of similarity to earlier selections.
The file names contain the initials of the state or agency which provided
the information. The collected material is as provided by the originating
location with minor changes as noted on the CAD record. Selected drawings
and materials were contributed by the following;
California Department of Fish and Game
Maryland Department of the Environment
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan,
Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York,
North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin
USDA Forest Service
USDI Bureau of Land Management
